Become a Tutor or SI Leader

Saint Louis University utilizes a peer-to-peer model for tutoring and Supplemental Instruction, where current undergraduates support other SLU students in specific classes. Tutors and Supplemental Instruction (SI) leaders guide students in becoming confident and self-directed learners. 

Academic Support is now accepting tutor and SI leader applications for the 2025-2026 academic year.

Application Process

Students interested in being a tutor or SI leader for the 2025-2026 academic year must complete the application and have a faculty member submit the recommendation form.

Applications and faculty recommendations are due on Tuesday, April 1, 2025. Interviews will held on Zoom on Saturday, April 12, 2025. 

We typically do not hire graduate students. 

Tutors

Peer tutors provide individual tutoring in at least one subject to fellow SLU students. 

Tutor Responsibilities
Tutors are expected to: 
 
  • Maintain consistent shifts of availability for student appointments. Tutors work four to seven hours per week. 
  • Be punctual for all shifts and notify the supervisor in a timely manner if they are unable to attend a shift.
  • Serve as a student resource regarding course content and strategies for success in these courses. 
  • Act as a role model for positive academic behavior and represent the University in a professional manner. 
  • Maintain student confidentiality. 
  • Complete appointment documentation.
  • Submit timesheets in Workday according to the University pay schedule. 
  • Promote Academic Support resources, including Supplemental Instruction, writing services and success coaching, as well as other University resources. 
  • Work on other tasks as assigned by the supervisor. 
Tutor Requirements

Tutors must: 

  • Have at least a 3.0 in the subject(s) they tutor, maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA, and remain in good academic standing. Preference is given to undergraduate students who have been enrolled at Saint Louis University for at least one semester, have taken the courses they are tutoring at Saint Louis University, and are able to tutor for more than one class.
  • Possess content competency in tutoring subject areas, as reflected through a recommendation from a professor who teaches in that area. 
  • Attend orientation at the beginning of the semester. Tutoring sessions begin during the second week of classes.
  • Participate in two one-hour trainings per semester.
  • Act in accordance with community standards, as outlined in the Student Handbook.
  • Demonstrate relevant personal characteristics, including: a welcoming and supportive demeanor, excellent active listening and communication skills, adaptability to different learning styles, problem-solving, inclusivity toward students from diverse backgrounds, maturity, patience, empathy, and reliability.
Tutor Hiring and Compensation

Once hired: 

  • Identity and employment authorization documentation must be provided to the Office of Human Resources.
  • Tutors can hold other on-campus jobs, but the combined hours per week (including tutoring and other positions) cannot exceed 20 hours per week during the fall or spring semester or 40 hours per week during the summer.
  • A professional staff member in Academic Support will provide supervision. 
  • Compensation is $13.75 per hour, before taxes, to be disbursed according to the University pay schedule. 

 

Supplemental Instruction Leaders

Supplemental Instruction leaders (SI leaders) attend class with students and provide weekly facilitated study sessions. 

SI Leader Responsibilities

SI leaders are expected to:

  • Attend and participate in all class meetings of the selected course. SI leaders must be able to attend every lecture without other class or personal conflicts. Students cannot miss part of another class to serve in this role. 
  • Facilitate three one-hour SI sessions per week, encouraging collaborative learning. SI leaders do not re-lecture the course content.
  • Spend approximately three hours per week preparing for SI sessions (by creating session plans, handouts, practice quizzes and tests, etc).
  • Maintain communication with the course instructor. 
  • Be punctual for all scheduled SI sessions and notify the supervisor in a timely manner if they are unable to hold a session. 
  • Serve as a resource for students regarding course content and strategies for success in the course. 
  • Act as a role model for positive academic behavior and represent the University in a professional manner.
  • Maintain student confidentiality and appropriate boundaries with students in the class.
  • Complete attendance records.
  • Submit timesheets in Workday according to the University pay schedule.
  • Promote Academic Support resources, including tutoring, writing services, success coaching and other University resources.
  • Work on other tasks as assigned by the supervisor. 
SI Leader Requirements

SI leaders must:

  • Have a B or higher in the course where they are applying to be the SI leader, maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA, and remain in good academic standing. Applicants must be undergraduate students who have taken the selected course at Saint Louis University. 
  • Possess content competency in the selected course, as reflected through a recommendation from a professor who teaches in that area.
  • Attend orientation at the beginning of the semester. SI leaders must begin attending their course on the first day of classes, and SI sessions start during the second week of classes.
  • Participate in any staff meetings or trainings.
  • Act in accordance with community standards, as outlined in the Student Handbook.
  • Demonstrate relevant personal characteristics, including: a welcoming and supportive demeanor, the ability to explain concepts clearly, excellent active listening and public speaking skills, adaptability to different learning styles, enthusiasm for collaborative learning, problem-solving, inclusivity toward students from diverse backgrounds, maturity, leadership, initiative and ability to work independently, patience, empathy, and reliability.
