Helping Our Own

Occasionally, a crisis arises that leaves us facing a financial emergency. Helping our Own is a program that is funded by SLU employees to help other SLU employees during such difficult times. In the spirit of our Catholic and Jesuit university mission, we are committed to caring for and serving each other in times of need.

This program provides a one-time monetary gift to any full-time or part-time permanent SLU employee experiencing a financial crisis. Eligibility for assistance requires at least one year of continuous employment with the University.

How to Apply

Employees are asked to complete the following steps to begin the process:

  1. Complete this brief online form. Email us at HelpingOurOwn@slu.edu if you prefer to have a paper or email version sent to you.
  2. Email a copy of the bill for which assistance is needed to HelpingOurOwn@slu.edu. The bill should be in the employee’s name.

One of our committee members will review your request and follow up with you shortly. Committee members will recuse themselves from the review of an employee they know or work with. Current committee members are Vicki Moreland, Peggy Dotson and Judi Buncher.

If Your Request is Approved

If your request is approved, the University will pay your utilities, landlord or mortgage lender directly. In this case, we may need your mortgage lender or landlord to complete a W-9 Request for Taxpayer ID Number so our payroll department can generate a check to them. We will explain this further if it becomes necessary. It typically takes about two weeks from the date of submission for the check to be generated.
